Published since 1891, The Brown Daily Herald is the second oldest student newspaper among America’s college dailies. These fragile bound publications total over 63,000 pages and covered news events around the world and at Brown University. After carefully unbinding the publications, TDAG utilized RAW capture camera systems to capture and digitize the newspaper pages. Post digitization, the pages were converted to PDF’s with OCR and METS/ALTO which are XML standards maintained by the Library of Congress. METS encodes the structure of the object while ALTO encodes textual content, like newspapers, in great detail.
