Genealogical research is very popular these days. The research not only solves mysteries but helps people find links to unknown parents or family members and study entire family trees. Graceland has kept Interment books back to their founding in 1860. TDAG is very proud to assist Graceland Cemetery in its efforts to digitize these records and to make the information more easily accessible.
Long famous as the “Cemetery of Architects,” Graceland Cemetery and Arboretum was established in 1860 and is one of the most beautiful and historic cemeteries in the country. The cemetery owes its design and exceptional natural beauty to two famous 19th-century landscape architects. While architects from the traditional to the father of skyscrapers and modern masters take center stage, you’ll find that Graceland also holds fascinating stories of private eyes and public figures, baseball and boxing greats, merchants and inventors, and other unique individuals.
The Interment books are HUGE! Weighing over 10 pounds each, a two-page record spreads to 18”x26. These vital historical records provide valuable genealogical research connecting family members to their family to learn about the age of death, previous address, potential cause of death, and location of the gravesite.
TDAG image technicians provided very special handling of these historic books through the digitization process. Using a large format overhead book scanner with a floating cradle to reduce stress on the binding, the pages were captured as a full two-page record. Throughout the process, the books remained in a climate-controlled environment.
