Universities and student newspapers go back an age…even to the turn of the 20th century. The Brown University Daily Herald, published since 1891, consisted of bound publications totaling over 63,000 pages covering news events around the world and on campus at Brown University.

After carefully unbinding the publications, TDAG utilized RAW capture camera systems to capture and digitize the newspaper pages. Post-digitization, the pages were converted to PDFs with OCR and METS/ALTO, which are XML standards maintained by the Library of Congress. METS encode the structure of the object, while ALTO encodes textual content, like newspapers, in great detail.
